For you, that is a simple signal. The locksmith who cuts and codes your car key has been checked and insured to a national standard, and is audited to keep it.
What is SERMI?
SERMI stands for Security-Related Repair and Maintenance Information. It is a Europe-wide scheme that controls who can reach the security data built into modern vehicles. That information used to sit only with main dealers. SERMI opens it to independent locksmiths and garages who meet the standard, so a lost key or an immobiliser fault no longer forces you back to the dealership.
The scheme went live in the UK on 1 April 2026. It is run here by RMI Standards and Certification (RMISC), which approves every operator and audits them to stay on the list.
What SERMI registration means for you
Newer cars guard their keys closely. To add a key, replace a lost one or reset an immobiliser, a locksmith needs authorised access to the manufacturer's security system - and that access now runs through SERMI. Because Autelix is approved, we can carry out this work properly on the vehicles that have moved to the scheme, rather than turning you away.
Say you lose the only key to a 2023 Ford. Cutting and coding a new one means talking to Ford's security system to authorise it, and from April 2026 that only happens through SERMI. As an approved locksmith, Autelix can do it at your door instead of sending you to a main dealer.
It also keeps that access in safe hands. Security data is exactly what a car thief would want, so SERMI only grants it to operators who have been identity-checked and vetted. When Autelix works on your car, the credentials sit behind it.
The brands moving to SERMI
Ford, Nissan, Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover are the first manufacturers to move their security access onto SERMI, and more will follow. We already handle key and immobiliser jobs on Fords and Nissans across Nottingham, so the approval lines up with the work we do every week.
What it took to get approved
SERMI approval is not a box you tick once. To be certified, a business has to prove it is legitimate and established, hold public liability insurance above £1 million, and pass Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks on the owner and named staff. Approval lasts five years, and RMISC audits every operator at least twice in that time - one visit booked in advance, one unannounced.
