A call-out fee is a charge for turning up, added before anyone has looked at the lock. Across the UK these run between £50 and £150, and they are the single most common reason a locksmith bill comes in above what the customer expected.

We do not charge one. The price we quote covers the visit and the work, so the figure agreed on the phone is the figure on the invoice.

Watch for the two things that reintroduce a call-out fee under another name. One is an hourly meter that starts when the van leaves. The other is a from-price that turns into an hourly rate if the job runs long. Ask which you are being quoted before anyone is dispatched.

The lock your insurer asks for

Hardware is most of the difference between a £110 job and a £200 one. A standard cylinder and a TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder take the same time to fit; the parts cost is what separates them.

Most UK home insurance policies now specify a TS007 3-star cylinder on external doors, and a BS3621 five-lever mortice on a timber front door. Whether the lock has to be damaged

We open locks by non-destructive methods wherever the lock allows it, which keeps the job to the entry price with no replacement to pay for. Some locks cannot be opened that way, and some are already damaged when we arrive.

Where damage is likely or necessary, we tell you what we propose to do and what it will cost before we start, and we only go ahead with your agreement.

Swapping a euro cylinder on a uPVC or composite door is the common job and sits at the bottom of that range. A full multipoint mechanism, where the whole strip inside the door is replaced rather than just the centre case, sits at the top. A mortice deadlock on a timber door falls between the two.
