When you are the one locked out

If you're the one standing outside your own front door, this is the simplest version: you meet us there, confirm it's your property, agree the price and give the go-ahead, and the job starts.

When you are calling on someone else's behalf

Plenty of calls come from someone who isn't the one locked out - a son or daughter booking for a parent, or a partner sorting things out while the other half is stuck at work. That's fine, but someone connected to the property still needs to be there when we arrive to confirm access and approve the work; we can't take that over the phone on someone else's word alone.

When nobody can get to the property

If genuinely nobody can get there - no key holder, no neighbour with a spare, nobody who can meet us on site - we wouldn't go ahead until someone can. It's a short delay against getting it wrong, and it applies the same way regardless of who booked the job or how urgent it sounds on the phone.

The euro cylinder

The multipoint gearbox

When a uPVC handle goes stiff or heavy, the gearbox inside the multi-point locking system has usually worn, or the spindle connecting it to the handle has sheared. It's a mechanism job rather than a full door replacement in most cases.

The door itself

Sometimes the lock was never the problem. When door hinges sag, the door sits lower in the frame and the lock points stop lining up with the keep - adjusting the hinges resolves what looks like a faulty lock far more often than replacing the lock does.

After a break-in, changing the locks comes first, so anything copied or taken during it stops working straight away. The damage often reaches further than the cylinder - a forced door can leave the keep torn out of the frame, and burglary repairs to the frame are as common as the lock work itself.

Burglary repair usually means replacing the damaged keep or frame section alongside the cylinder, and damaged cylinders are replaced with British Standard or kitemarked anti-snap cylinders, the grade your insurer expects, rather than a like-for-like swap of whatever was fitted before. Where a window's been forced or a pane's gone through, boarding up the opening is the immediate job - window boarding holds things secure until a glazier can deal with the glass itself.
