Where we work from

Annesley sits just north of Hucknall, off the A611. Most of our week runs between there, Nottingham and the Ashfield towns, so Hucknall is not an outlying job for us - it is on the route. We do not charge for turning up. Entry is priced separately from any lock or part, so if you are locked out and nothing needs replacing, you pay for the entry and nothing else. You get the figure before we start, not after we finish.

We carry common cylinders, mortice locks and multipoint parts in the van, so most jobs finish on the first visit at the clear price you were quoted.

How non-destructive entry works

Most locks can be picked or manipulated open without drilling, provided the lock has not already been damaged or the door forced. We look at the lock first and pick the least destructive method that will actually work on it. If drilling genuinely is the only way in, we tell you why before we touch it, and we carry the replacement cylinder to put the door back in service the same visit.

Any hour, any day

We take calls around the clock, seven days a week - a 24 hour service in the plain sense of the phrase. A lockout at eleven at night is the same job at the same rate as one at eleven in the morning, with no unsocial-hours premium and no weekend surcharge. Emergency lock repairs get the same treatment: if the door will not lock and the property cannot be left, that call goes to the front of the queue. Flats, shared entrances and communal doors

Flats bring a second problem, which is that the communal door often is not yours to authorise work on. We can open your own door and, where the managing agent or freeholder has given the go-ahead, deal with the entrance door as well. Tell us the setup when you call and we will bring what the job needs.

The door types in Hucknall split fairly cleanly. A good part of the housing is older terraced streets and post-war semis, and the doors on them have usually been through at least one round of replacement already. That is where most of our residential locksmith work in the town sits: mechanisms that have worn out rather than locks that were wrong in the first place.

Worn multipoint mechanisms and gearboxes

A uPVC or composite door that needs lifting, shoving or holding at an angle before the key will turn is telling you the mechanism is on its way out. Left alone it eventually fails shut or fails open, and the second is worse. We carry common gearbox and multipoint parts, so most of these are one visit. When the gearbox has gone

If the handle lifts but nothing engages, the gearbox has usually stripped internally. That is a replacement rather than a repair, but it is the gearbox that gets replaced, not the whole door.

When the door has dropped

Sometimes the mechanism is fine and the door has simply sagged on its hinges, so the locking points no longer meet the keeps. Adjusting the hinges and keeps fixes it, and it is a far cheaper answer than a new mechanism.

Mortice locks on timber doors

Older timber front and back doors usually run a mortice lock rather than a euro cylinder. Sticking, stiffness or a key that turns halfway is often wear in the lock body or a misaligned keep. Where the lock body has genuinely failed we replace it, and we fit British Standard BS3621 five-lever locks as the default on a timber front door.

Snapped keys and keys that will not turn

If a key snapped in the lock this morning, it is not usually the key's fault - it is a lock that has been getting stiffer for weeks. We extract the broken section, get the door working and replace whatever caused the stiffness. Handles, hinges and window locks

Door furniture wears out on its own schedule. Loose handles, worn hinges, window locks that no longer engage and patio door mechanisms that have gone stiff are all everyday jobs, and they are worth sorting before they become the reason the door will not lock at all. Window repair work on double glazed doors and frames sits alongside the door work rather than being a separate trade.

The newer estates around Hucknall are a different problem entirely. The doors are modern composite and uPVC doors in good condition, so nothing is worn out and nothing needs repairing. The question on those houses is not whether the door works - it is what grade of cylinder the builder put in it, which is why uPVC lock upgrades are the most common job we do on those streets.

Why the grade of the cylinder matters more than the door

A composite door is only as secure as the euro cylinder sitting in it, and cylinders vary enormously in how they behave under attack. A door that looks and feels solid can be running a basic cylinder that offers very little resistance. It is worth knowing which one you have rather than assuming a new door came with a good lock.

Anti-snap and TS007 3-star

Cylinder snapping is the most common forced-entry method on uPVC and composite doors. An anti-snap cylinder sacrifices its outer section under attack while the rest of the lock keeps holding the door. We fit TS007 3-star kitemarked anti-snap locks as standard, and of all the high-security upgrades available on a modern door this is the one that changes the outcome most often.

BS3621 and what insurers ask for

Insurers commonly name a minimum standard for external doors, and BS3621 for mortice locks and TS007 3-star for cylinders are the two you will see most often. We fit British Standard locks and insurance approved cylinders to those grades and can confirm the specification of anything we supply. Lock installation to a named standard is worth getting right first time, because a policy condition is not something you want to discover after a claim. Keyed-alike sets for front, back and garage

Keyed alike means several cylinders configured to one key, so the same key opens the front door, the back door and the garage. It is a straightforward change on a single property and it removes the keyring problem permanently. Key cutting for extra copies afterwards is simple once the set exists.

Getting the door secure on the same visit

After a forced entry the first job is making the property secure again, not deciding on the perfect long-term answer. We repair or replace what has been damaged there and then, and where the opening cannot be closed properly we can board it. Our boarding up service covers doors, windows and glazed panels.

Replacing forced mechanisms to insurance standard

A door that held during an attempt is not necessarily undamaged. Multipoint mechanisms bend, cylinders crack and keeps get pulled out of the frame, and a lock that survived one attack has usually been weakened by it. Cameras afterwards

Plenty of people want a camera up once it has happened once. We handle CCTV installation for homes and businesses, including Ring doorbell cameras, and alarm installation where a property wants one. Shops and units around the town centre

Hucknall has a proper town centre rather than a parade of shops, and commercial premises there have different needs from houses. Both suit managed workspaces and any building with people coming and going on different schedules. We advise on which fits after looking at the site rather than specifying in advance.
