Most people ringing a locksmith have no idea what the job should cost, which is exactly why some firms quote on the doorstep once you are already committed. We would rather set the terms out first.

No call-out fee

We do not charge for turning up. There is no call-out fee anywhere in the NG17 area, at any hour, and no premium for evenings, nights, weekends or bank holidays. The rate at two in the morning is the rate at two in the afternoon.

Entry and the lock are priced separately

Getting you back inside and sorting the lock are two different jobs and we price them separately. If you are locked out and nothing is actually broken, you pay for the entry and nothing else. If the lock does need replacing, you get a clear price for that before we touch it.

What actually drives the price

The variables are the door type, which component has failed, and the grade of lock going back in. A euro cylinder swap on a uPVC door is a smaller job than cutting a new mortice into a timber door edge, and a TS007 3-star cylinder costs more than a basic one because it does more. Describe the door and the symptoms when you call and we can usually give you a figure over the phone.

An emergency locksmith call is the one job where the difference between firms shows immediately, because it is decided by whether anyone actually answers and how much damage the door takes.

How non-destructive entry works

Most locks can be picked or manipulated open without drilling, as long as the lock has not already been damaged or the door forced. Lock picking is the first thing we try rather than the last, because a door that opens without damage costs you less than one that has to be drilled and rebuilt. We assess the lock, choose the least destructive method that will actually work on it, and only move to drilling when nothing else will open the door. If it comes to that we explain why beforehand, and we carry replacement cylinders so the door is working again before we leave.

Any hour of the day or night

We run a 24/7 emergency service, seven days a week, so an emergency locksmith call at three in the morning is answered by the same person who would answer it at three in the afternoon. A lockout entry service is not much use if it only operates in office hours, and most of the calls that genuinely cannot wait come in at the wrong end of the day. Call whenever it happens and we will tell you honestly when we can be with you.

Flats and shared entrances

A flat brings a second door that is not yours to authorise work on. We can open your own door, and deal with the communal entrance as well where the managing agent or freeholder has given the go-ahead. Say which setup you have when you call so we bring the right kit.

Moving in is the one moment when changing the locks is obviously worth doing, and it is the moment most people skip because there is too much else going on.

Who else still has a key

You have the keys the seller or agent handed over. What nobody can tell you is how many other keys exist - previous tenants, cleaners, relatives, a builder who never gave one back. A new lock installation resets that completely, and because it is a short job on most doors it is worth doing before the boxes are even unpacked.

Between tenancies

The same logic applies harder to rented property, where the turnover is faster and the keyholder list is longer. Replacement locks between tenancies are quick, and a lock replacement booked around the changeover date costs a landlord almost nothing in lost time, so for anyone running several properties we schedule them in a single run rather than as separate visits.

One key for front, back and garage

While the locks are being changed it costs very little extra to have them keyed alike, so a single key opens the front door, the back door and the garage. It is the cheapest quality-of-life improvement in the trade, and because the cylinders are already coming out it is far easier to arrange during a change than to retrofit afterwards.

Not every problem needs a replacement. Lock repair is the first thing we look at, because a mechanism that can be repaired or adjusted is cheaper than a new one and usually faster.

Multipoint mechanisms and gearboxes

A door you have to lift, lean on or hold at an angle before the key will turn is telling you the multipoint mechanism is failing. Ignore it and it will eventually fail locked or fail unlocked, and the second is the one that matters. When the gearbox has stripped

If the handle lifts freely but nothing engages, the gearbox has usually stripped inside. That is a replacement rather than a repair, but it is the mechanism being replaced, not the door.

When the door has dropped

Sometimes the mechanism is sound and the door has simply settled on its hinges, so the locking points no longer line up with the keeps. Adjusting the hinges and keeps solves it, at a fraction of the cost of new gear.

Timber doors and mortice locks

Older timber doors run mortice locks rather than euro cylinders. Stiffness, a key that turns halfway, or a bolt that no longer throws fully is usually wear in the lock body or a keep that has moved. Where the body has genuinely failed we fit a British Standard five-lever mortice as the default on a front door, which is one of the more worthwhile lock upgrades available on older housing because it brings a period door up to the grade insurers now name.

Windows, handles and hinges

Door and window furniture wears out on its own schedule. Window repair work, loose handles, tired hinges and patio doors that have gone stiff are everyday jobs across doors and windows, and they are all far cheaper to deal with before they become the reason something will not lock at all. Small security improvements of that kind are usually the ones that stop a bigger bill later.

Snapped keys and broken key extraction

Extracting a broken key is a job we attend most weeks, and key extractions rarely come alone - the lock that snapped one key will usually snap the next. We remove the snapped section, get the door working, and deal with whatever caused it rather than just handing you a new key. Why keys snap in the first place

A key almost never snaps because the key was weak. It snaps because the lock has been getting stiffer for weeks and the key has been taking more and more force. That is why replacing only the key tends to produce the same phone call a month later.

Spare keys and key cutting

Key cutting for house keys is straightforward and worth doing before you need it. A spare cut while you still have a working key is a small job; the same situation with no key at all is a much bigger one.

Rekeying instead of replacing

Where the lock itself is sound, rekey services are often the better answer than replacement. Re-pinning a cylinder to a new key gives you the same security benefit as a new lock at lower cost, and it keeps hardware that is working perfectly well.

High security keys

Some cylinders use restricted or patented keys that cannot be copied at a kiosk, with duplication controlled by the keyholder. They suit properties where you need to know exactly how many copies exist, and they pair naturally with the anti-snap cylinders below.

Burglary repairs run in a set order - make the property secure tonight, replace what has been compromised to the right grade, then document it for the insurer.

Making the property secure the same day

After a forced entry the priority is a property that locks tonight, not a perfect long-term specification. We repair or replace what has been damaged on the visit, and where an opening cannot be closed properly our boarding up service covers doors, windows and glazed panels.

Replacing to insurance standard

A door that held is not necessarily undamaged - mechanisms bend, cylinders crack and keeps get pulled out of the frame. We fit high security locks to the grades insurers name: TS007 3-star anti-snap locks on euro cylinder doors, and BS3621 mortice locks on timber. What your insurer will ask for
