When we arrive at a lockout, the first step is a quick assessment - door type, lock type, and whether there is any way to confirm you have the right to access the property. Standard checks before any work starts.

From there, our default is non-destructive entry. Depending on the lock, that might mean picking, decoding, or manipulating the mechanism to release without damage. The method depends on what is fitted and the condition it is in. We will tell you upfront what we are going to try and why.

Drilling is a last resort. If the lock cannot be opened non-destructively, we discuss drilling with you before proceeding - it is your door, and you make the call with the full picture. Where a lock needs to be drilled out, we carry replacement cylinders and hardware on the van and fit a new lock before we leave, so the door is secure when we go.

A break-in leaves the property unsecured at the worst possible moment. Getting the door shut and locked is the immediate priority, and that is where we start.

Where glass has been broken - a glazed door panel, a sidelight, or a ground-floor window used for entry - we board up the opening to make the property weather-tight and secure until glazing can be replaced. The focus is fast security, not a permanent repair to the glass itself.

Once the property is physically closed, we assess the lock and door frame. Forced entries often damage the cylinder, the keep, or the frame behind the strike plate, even when the door looks intact. We replace what needs replacing: British Standard cylinders, anti-snap kitemarked cylinders, or a full multipoint mechanism where the forced entry has damaged the gearbox. All replacement hardware is insurance-compliant, and we can provide documentation of what was fitted and to what standard - useful when you notify your insurer.

Not every emergency is a lockout. Some calls come in because a lock has failed in place - the door will not secure properly, or a key has snapped inside the barrel and the mechanism is stuck.

Snapped keys in the lock are one of the most common emergency calls we attend. The fragment jams the barrel and leaves the door either stuck open or stuck with the key half-in. We extract the broken piece - usually without damaging the cylinder - and then assess whether the barrel itself needs replacing or can be left in service.

Seized cylinders are another regular fault. A cylinder that turns fine on a warm afternoon can stick badly in cold or damp conditions, or after years of dry use. If the cylinder has failed rather than the mechanism behind it, a direct cylinder swap is a fast fix. Where the multipoint gearbox has failed - the handle lifts but the lock points do not throw - we carry common gearbox parts and can usually complete the repair in one visit.
