Multipoint mechanisms and gearboxes

A door that requires lifting, leaning on or holding at a particular angle before the key will turn is telling you the multipoint mechanism is failing. When the gearbox has stripped

If the handle lifts freely but nothing engages inside the door, the gearbox has usually stripped internally. That is a replacement rather than a repair - but it is the mechanism being replaced, not the door, which is a distinction worth making before anyone starts talking about a new frame.

When the door has dropped

Sometimes the mechanism is entirely sound and the door has simply settled on its hinges over the years, so the locking points no longer align with the keeps in the frame. Adjusting the hinges and repositioning the keeps resolves it, usually on the same visit.

Windows, handles and hinges

Window repair work - loose handles, worn espagnolette bolts, hinges that have bent under a heavy sash - sits alongside door work on most visits. These faults get put off until a window will not lock at all. We check the surrounding hardware while we are on site, because small problems caught early are cheaper than the larger ones that follow them.

Broken key extraction is a common job across the patch. The key almost never fails because the key itself was weak.

We remove the snapped section, identify what caused it and address the underlying problem rather than just handing over a new key. On a euro cylinder the barrel rotates with the key, so any grip just spins the fragment rather than drawing it out. Leave it in place and call us.

Why keys snap in the first place

A key snaps because the lock has been getting stiffer for weeks or months - the cylinder worn, the mechanism tight - and the key has been taking progressively more force to turn. The snap is the end of a process, not a sudden event. Replacing only the key tends to produce the same call a month later, so we look at the cylinder as well.

Insurance approved locks are the grades your policy may already name. If the cylinder or mortice on your door does not meet that specification, a claim can be reduced or refused. Most people discover this only after an incident. The check is straightforward: identify the lock on the door and compare it against what the policy requires.

Anti-snap cylinders and TS007 3-star

Euro cylinder doors - which covers most uPVC and composite doors in Long Eaton - are vulnerable to snap attacks when the cylinder protrudes beyond the face plate. Anti-snap locks rated TS007 3-star are the standard response, and they are the lock upgrades that make the most immediate difference on euro cylinder doors. BS3621 and what your insurer expects

Timber doors with mortice locks sit under a different standard. BS3621 is the British Standard most insurers name for a front-door mortice, and fitting a five-lever mortice to that grade is the most worthwhile security improvement available for older housing. We fit British Standard locks as the default on any front-door mortice job.

Access control, master key systems and smart locks

Where a building has several doors and several keyholders, a master key system gives each person access to their own zone while one master opens everything. Master-key systems suit workshops, small offices, care homes and any multi-unit building where access zones are meaningful. Where the keyholder list changes regularly - a unit with staff turnover, for instance - access control systems issue and withdraw access without recutting anything, and keyless entry via fob or keypad is the more practical answer.
